“I think the world of painting is enormous and I can delve into creating the pictorial worlds in a lifetime." - Zhang Yexing
Born in Shenyang in 1981, Zhang graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and currently lives and works in Beijing.
Interior space is a common theme in Zhang’s works. The cozy atmosphere of interior space brings him feelings of comfort and reminds him of his childhood—such sentimentality and nostalgia gives birth to his creative content.
Zhang Yexing describes his painting process, “During the painting process, the image is constantly scraped and recreated, and the pictorial gradually forms an atmospheric tone. The paints are moved to the edge of the frame. They accumulate some natural shapes, as if the painting world spread to a real space."
Zhang’s work expresses the artist’s focus of everyday objects and the interpretation of reality. He depicts a visual narrative that reflects a deeper, inner state of mind. Through the rendering of details, colors and light, the objects are portrayed harmoniously with the pictorial background and planes. Pigments layered at the edge of the canvas manifest thick, undulating textures, drawing our attention to the work’s material properties. Curtains often appear in Zhang’s works, as the beautiful draperies seem to unfold narratives, inviting the viewer to imagine beyond.
